Telenor — Splitt

Consumer app for splitting shared expenses. Zero-friction onboarding and a clean interaction model for groups on the move.

Telenor — Splitt

Background

Splitt was a Norwegian consumer app for splitting shared expenses between friends and groups. The market had established players, but the dominant apps had become cluttered — feature-rich to the point of friction.

The brief: a cleaner, faster alternative that solved the core job — "we went out, now let's settle up" — without getting in the way.

The challenge

Expense-splitting apps have a coordination problem. The app is only useful if everyone in the group uses it. This means onboarding can't be a barrier. It also means the interaction model has to feel instantly familiar — there's no learning budget when you're at a restaurant deciding who owes what.

Nobody opens a bill-splitting app looking for a new skill. They want to stop worrying about money so the evening can continue.

Process

We mapped the core user journey from "we're splitting this" to "everyone's settled up" and counted every step. Then we cut steps until it hurt, then cut some more.

The result was a three-tap add flow: item, amount, split. No account required to see what you owe — only to pay. Guest access for passive participants removed the biggest onboarding barrier.

User journeys for Splitt

Key decisions

**No dashboard by default.** When you open the app, you see your active group — not a home screen. The most common action is immediate.

**Debt consolidation.** If A owes B and B owes C, the app consolidates to A owes C. Fewer transactions, less awkwardness.

**Settlement is final.** Marking a debt settled cannot be undone by the creditor. Trust is built in.

Outcome

Splitt launched on iOS in 2020. The zero-account onboarding proved to be the most significant conversion driver — over 60% of new users joined via a shared link rather than organic discovery.
